24 Hours After Getting Liposuction

Liposuction is the go-to procedure for patients who have reached their goal weight and want to remove unwanted pockets of stubborn fat.

While the general timeframe for liposuction recovery varies from one individual to the next, by the six-week mark, most patients should be feeling significantly better and may be able to return to their daily activities as usual.

At the six-week point, most patients are no longer required to wear their supportive compression garments unless deemed necessary by their provider or surgeon. While you may be aware of the fast recovery turnaround time following liposuction, you may be less aware of how to care for your body after the first 24 hours post procedure.

If you are local to Long Beach, California, or the general Southern California region, you may work with expert board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Josh Waltzman for your liposuction procedure. During your consultation, the two of you will review your goals and expectations, as well as the surgical guidelines and protocols of your procedure. Use this time to ask any questions or concerns you may have so that you can feel prepared for the procedure.

In the meantime, continue reading to learn about some of the most important things to remember as you recover within the first 24 hours after your procedure.

What Are the General Recommendations Following Liposuction Surgery?

Many patients experience mild to moderate discomfort during the first 24 to 72 hours following their liposuction surgery. Your provider may prescribe medications that can give you relief during this time. Wear your compression garments, sleep, and rest as much as possible, and avoid strenuous activities and excess movement.

Make sure you avoid exercise for the first 24 hours after your procedure. After that, include only low-impact activities such as brief walks, as these gentle forms of exercise may speed up the natural healing process in the body. If you have questions about what is and is not allowed in terms of exercise, discuss your questions with your provider for more information.

The Importance of Hydration in the First 24 Hours After Surgery

In addition to resting, avoiding excess movement, and wearing your supportive garments, be sure to stay hydrated, especially within the first 24 hours following the procedure. To avoid swelling, stay away from drinks with high sodium levels. Instead, stick with water, tea, or other hydrating beverages. Avoid caffeine and soda as these can contribute to dehydration and additional sodium.

The Waltzman Institute surgeons may provide  additional recommendations for you to follow. Always follow your provider’s instructions to obtain the best results possible from your liposuction procedure.
