Breast Augmentation in Cerritos

Women experience many changes in their bodies as they age. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, genetics, and a lack of collagen and elastin can all contribute to a loss of breast volume.

Some women seek breast surgery because are not satisfied with the size of their natural breasts or feel their breasts are out of proportion to the rest of their body. Breast augmentation in Cerritos, done by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Josh Waltzman, can create a more proportioned body silhouette and increase your satisfaction with your appearance.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure also known as augmentation mammoplasty. The procedure changes the size, shape, and volume of a woman’s breasts by using implants or a fat transfer.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia at our onsite surgery center, so that you can receive your pre-op evaluation, surgery, and post-op care in the same place.

The incision is discreetly placed in the breast fold. Implants can be placed underneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular), directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular), or between the muscle and fascia (subfacial).

Types of Breast Augmentation Available

In addition to the different techniques Dr. Waltzman may choose to place the implant, there are also two types of breast augmentation: implants and fat transfer. During your consultation, you will discuss the type of breast augmentation that will work best for you.

Fat Transfer

A fat transfer breast augmentation is also known as an autologous fat transfer. This technique involves harvesting fat using liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips. The fat is purified and then injected into the breast tissue.

Fat transfer breast augmentation has several advantages, including offering more natural-looking and feeling results. Fat transfers help contour the donor site and add volume and size to breast tissue. It also avoids the risks associated with implants as they age.

However, there are volume limitations, and multiple procedures can be required to achieve the desired results since not all the fat transferred for a breast augmentation in Cerritos will survive long-term. Fat transfer can be helpful for small to moderate increases in size.

Breast Implants

Breast implants are the most common method of augmenting size, volume, and shape. They offer a variety of options to meet your preferences and anatomical considerations. Breast implants can be filled with saline or silicone.

The majority of implants used are smooth, round implants.  Some women may benefit from combining implants and autologous fat transfer. Adding volume with the implants and using the fat transfer to fine-tune the shape can achieve an even more natural appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Women who are good candidates for breast augmentation in Cerritos are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts and would like added volume and size. Good candidates are generally healthy without any underlying medical conditions that impair healing or increase the risk of surgical or post-operative complications.

Women who smoke must commit to eliminating any nicotine for six weeks before and after the surgery, including smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, nicotine gum, or nicotine patches. Nicotine increases the risk of complications during surgery, impairs healing, and increases the risk of infection.

What to Expect During Recovery

While the details of recovery from breast augmentation surgery vary by individual, there are general stages everyone goes through and things you can expect during the process. Immediately after the surgery, most people feel groggy and tired. Some discomfort, swelling, and minimal bruising in the chest area is normal.

Dr. Waltzman will prescribe medication to manage the pain and discomfort. Sometimes we will recommend a surgical bra or compression garment that helps support your breasts, minimize the swelling, and enhance healing.

At your pre-op visit and before leaving the surgery center, you will receive detailed instructions on caring for your incisions, which you should follow carefully to reduce the risk of complications and infection and improve healing.

In the first few days, it is crucial to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Within the first week, you can start doing light activities, such as going for walks, and by four weeks, most patients are able to increase their activity level gradually.

After six weeks, you should be able to resume normal activities, including returning to upper body workouts. Many people with a desk job can return to work by week one. The final results can take several months to become apparent. By this time, the swelling will be gone, and the scars will begin to fade.
