Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau®

IN LONG BEACH, CA AND SERVING LA, ORANGE COUNTY AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

When we smile, frown, squint, or make any of the hundreds of facial expressions humans are capable of, tiny muscle contractions subtly shift the position of our facial skin. Over time, these muscle contractions and skin movements result in lines and creases, which grow deeper and more pronounced as we age.

These movement-related wrinkles (also called “dynamic wrinkles”) often appear near the eyes, in between the eyebrows, and across the forehead. Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® are among the simplest, fastest, and most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments, acting to reduce facial lines and wrinkles without surgery.

Your Consultation for Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau®

Before any treatment with Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® in Long Beach, Dr. Waltzman will consult with you to answer your questions and perform a detailed examination of your face. He will recommend a customized treatment plan to meet your cosmetic goals and explain any opportunities for more comprehensive improvements combining treatments.

The cost of Botox® injections depends on the amount of product used, the type of neuromodulator you select, the skill and reputation of the provider, and other factors. We will provide you with an estimate for your Botox® injections when you visit our practice.

How Do Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® Work?

Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® in Long Beach, and other injectable treatments reduce and soften these movement-related lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause them to form. Known as neuromodulators, they act by interrupting signals from the nerves to the muscles.

In cosmetic treatment, Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® are precisely applied with extremely fine needles to specific muscles, reducing only the facial movements that are causing wrinkles without otherwise affecting full facial expression.

The needles used for Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® injections are very fine, so most patients do not experience much discomfort. Many patients describe the sensation as similar to a pinprick or a bug bite. Topical anesthetics, or numbing sprays, can be used to ensure your injections are as comfortable as possible.

Am I a Candidate for Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau®?

If you are bothered by lines and wrinkles caused by regular facial movement but aren’t ready to consider cosmetic surgery, you’re likely an excellent candidate for Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® in Long Beach. These injectables are minimally invasive, so they carry very few risks for healthy people, and they are highly versatile. Neuromodulators are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

All neuromodulators use a different formulation of botulinum toxin to force muscles to relax and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Units per area treated are different depending on how the product is mixed, and the spread of each product is different, which changes the way the treatment is administered.

What Do Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® Treat?

Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® produce the best results when treating dynamic wrinkles, the lines and creases formed when you squint, smile, or make other facial expressions. They do not work on wrinkles that are present when your facial muscles are at rest, which are known as “static” wrinkles.

Ideal candidates for Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® include men and women seeking treatment for the following:

  • Glabellar frown lines (also called “11 lines”)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • “Bunny lines” on the side of the nose
  • Platysmal bands on the neck
  • Drooping corners of the mouth
  • Drooping corners of the mouth
  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Chin dimpling

Neuromodulators can be an effective treatment for conditions other than dynamic wrinkles. They can stop excessive sweating on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and under the arms. They can calm muscle spasms in the neck and eyes and reduce migraines.

A liquid facelift is when dermal fillers and neuromodulators are combined to produce comprehensive facial rejuvenation. These injectables can provide subtle lift to areas that are starting to droop, smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours for ideal definition.

While a liquid facelift cannot replace a traditional surgical facelift, it is an excellent option for patients seeking a noninvasive way to treat the major signs of age. However, a traditional facelift is a better option for patients with more advanced signs of age, like sagging skin and deep skin folds.

What Results Can I Expect from Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau®?

It usually takes about a week for the full results to settle. Results from Dysport® typically show up a few days sooner than do results from Botox®. Jeuveau begins to take effect in 3 to 5 days, and full effects are usually visible within two weeks. Patients can expect their results to last for around three months on average.

Injection of neurotoxins requires knowledge of anatomy and how the muscles work. When injected in the right places, you will be able to make facial expressions without looking frozen or stiff.

What is Recovery Like After Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau®?

The most common side effects are slight redness and mild swelling at the injection sites, but these temporary symptoms subside quickly. You may return to your normal activities after receiving Botox®. However, it is recommended that you avoid lying down, touching, or rubbing the treated areas and reapplying makeup for at least four hours after treatment.

Strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first day to prevent Botox®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® from spreading to an unintended area. You will receive instructions on when you can resume various activities.

During your consultation, Dr. Waltzman will review your medications and vitamins/supplements, as some can thin your blood. Twenty-four hours before your treatment, avoid drinking alcohol and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, like Aspirin and Ibuprofen.

You can also start taking Arnica pellets one day before, the day of and the following day to reduce any bruising that may occur. You can also apply an ice pack to the treatment before and after treatment to reduce any bruising.
