Although motherhood can be one of the most rewarding things a woman can do, it can affect your life in ways you might not expect. It’s not just because of the growing breasts or belly, either–weight fluctuations and hormonal changes can considerably change the quality of our skin.
Although some women seem to bounce back almost immediately after their pregnancy, so many more women struggle to get their body back the way it used to be. But that’s perfectly normal—there are some changes, like sagging skin, sagging breasts, and a loose abdomen, that can’t be fixed with diet and exercise.
Thankfully, there is a way for you return your body back to its prime: the mommy makeover. The mommy makeover is a combination of powerful surgical procedures designed to target the areas affected by pregnancy and motherhood.

The Ideal Candidate for a Mommy Makeover – Long Beach
The mommy makeover is typically used for women who want to reverse the effects of motherhood on their figure, but of course, it can be used for any woman that wants comprehensive plastic surgery for the body. In general, the ideal candidate should have the following characteristics:
- Should be in relatively good health – no major untreated conditions
- Wants to reverse the effects of motherhood on the body
- Able to quit smoking
- Able to stop taking certain supplements and vitamins before the surgery
- Should be close to their ideal weight or at a stable weight
- Has realistic expectations for what a mommy makeover can do for them
What a Mommy Makeover Can Do
At Waltzman Plastic & Reconstructive surgery, we stress that the mommy makeover should not be considered a weight loss procedure. The mommy makeover is really only helpful for women who are close to their ideal weight, but still wants to change a few areas that can’t be helped with diet and exercise.
It will depend on what the specific patient wants, but by and large a mommy makeover is used to rejuvenate areas like the abdomen and the breasts. From sagging breasts, stubborn pockets of fat, to loose skin, a mommy makeover can help restore a more youthful, athletic look. In one outpatient surgical procedure, you can combine liposuction, the tummy tuck, and breast surgery to give yourself the figure you’ve always wanted. The mommy makeover can also include nonsurgical procedures like CoolSculpting so that you can contour your figure with minimal downtime
A mommy makeover is also ideal for patients that want to consolidate their recovery time. Because the mommy makeover combines different procedures, the recovery time is slightly longer than a recovery from a single procedure—but it’s much shorter than multiple recovery periods done after another.
As we’ve said before, there are a few plastic surgery procedures that are seen as staples of the mommy makeover:
We know that pregnancy, or lactation in particular, causes the breasts to swell. What’s not widely acknowledged is that, once lactation is over, the breasts often shrink to a smaller size. Because it can help restore the volume lost to breastfeeding, a breast augmentation is typically performed in a mommy makeover.
A breast augmentation helps women achieve fuller, more voluminous breasts using breast implants. Breast augmentation is highly customizable, and Dr. Waltzman will guide you through the entire process so that you can make the right decisions.
We highlighted the issues caused by lactation above, but we should also mention that the breasts’ stretched skin sometimes never bounces back. In that case, women are sometimes left with breasts that substantially sag. To help women reposition the breasts to a perkier position, we recommend a plastic surgery procedure called the breast lift. In a breast lift, Dr. Waltzman will remove excess skin and tighten the breasts to create a more youthful shape. The breasts and nipples will also be moved to a perkier position.

Breast Lift with Implants
It’s important for us to mention that a breast lift often results in a small reduction in breast volume for the patient. We also don’t recommend that patients insert heavy implants into a breast whose skin has compromised elasticity; this could cause the sagging to worsen.
If you’d like to address reduced breast volume as well as sagging, a breast lift with implants can help you achieve the best of both worlds. We highly recommend that patients who want breast implants that also have a substantial amount of sagging add a breast lift.
Motherhood, or the hormonal changes brought on by motherhood, often lead to the development of stubborn pockets of fat around the body that no diet can remove. When all else fails, liposuction can remove these stubborn pockets of fat to sculpt the body into a sleeker, more athletic figure. Using a narrow, hollow tube called a cannula, Dr. Waltzman breaks up and sucks out fatty tissue from the body. Once the fat has been removed and the skin has redraped itself, you’ll be able to enjoy a trimmer figure. And although it’s a major plastic surgery procedure, liposuction only results in small incisions that are inconspicuous once they heal.

The belly is an especially popular target in the mommy makeover. Our core is essentially made up of an inner girdle of connective tissue and muscle that holds the inner organs together. Pregnancy will stretch out this inner girdle, but it won’t so easily bounce back after childbirth. Indeed, many women find themselves with excess skin, stretch marks, and loose abdominal muscles that can’t be tightened with exercise afterwards.
A tummy tuck will address the problems in the abdomen by removing excess skin, removing excess fat, and tightening loosened abdominal muscles for a more athletic belly. Because a tummy tuck removes tissue, it will also remove the stretch marks situated below the belly button.

Recovery from a Mommy Makeover
Keep in mind that a mommy makeover will vary from patient to patient, so there’s no typical recovery period for all patients. All women also heal differently, so your recovery will move at the speed your body heals from the surgery.
You will feel some soreness, swelling, and discomfort after your mommy makeover, but we will give you prescription pain medication. Many of our patients report that the recovery is quite tolerable, and that a few days into their recovery, they can switch from prescription pain medication to over-the-counter pain pills.
On average, patients take about 2-3 weeks to heal from a mommy makeover. Regardless of what procedures you undergo, we highly recommend that patients avoid any strenuous activity including exercise during the first couple of weeks. After the 1-month mark of your recovery, you can perform some light workouts before easing into your regular routine.
We also ask that you get some help with childcare for the first few weeks of your recovery; you will not be able to lift or carry anything heavy during that time.
