Liposuction is also known as liposculpture, suction lipectomy or just lipo. This procedure will diminish stubborn fat deposits and sculpt specific areas to enhance body contours and proportion. It can be applied almost anywhere there are localized fat deposits, from the calves and ankles to the thighs and inner knees and up to the neck. Liposuction can also be combined with, and enhance the outcome, of other cosmetic procedures.

Ideal liposuction candidates are adults who are bothered by areas of fat that don’t respond to diet or exercise alone, are within 30% of their ideal body weight, and have healthy, elastic skin and good muscle tone. In other words, the ideal patient should be as fit as possible before the procedure.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed procedures because of its ability to contour and sculpt the body with little down time. The amount of fat that can be removed safely in one session is determined by your plastic surgeon. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction. However, in the hands of a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Waltzman, liposuction’s ability to contour the physique can create the appearance of weight loss.

The liposuction consultation

During your consultation with Dr. Waltzman, you will discuss your goals, your medical history and examine your body. He will take photos, and discuss your options, likely outcomes and risks. Then he will recommend a course of treatment to achieve your goals. You will have plenty of time to discuss your concerns and ask questions.

How is liposuction done?

Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the amount of fat to be removed. Dr. Waltzman will inject a local anesthetic to numb the areas to be treated and make small, discreet incisions in those locations. A saline tumescent solution will be infused into the tissue to be treated, to reduce bleeding and trauma before the fat is removed. Then a cannula, or small hollow tube, connected to a vacuum is inserted through the incisions into the fat layer beneath the skin. The cannula is maneuvered under the skin to target the specific areas chosen. This process breaks up the fat, which is then suctioned out.

After surgery, there will be swelling and bruising that will diminish as you heal. Recovery times vary, and final results may take up to 6 months. Your body will continue to heal, with subtle improvements for up to 12 months. As you heal, the skin contracts and shrinks to your new contours. You may be given a compression garment to assist in skin contraction so that an even contour is achieved. To achieve better satisfaction and long term success, it is important that you develop and maintain positive life-style changes including diet and exercise.
