Gynecomastia Surgery

IN LONG BEACH, CA AND SERVING LA, ORANGE COUNTY AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Gynecomastia is a condition where men develop enlarged breast tissue. It’s a surprisingly common issue that affects men of all ages, with typical symptoms that include puffy breasts, excess skin, or a sagging chest. Men who want to combat this condition can choose plastic surgery to create a smoother, more masculine chest.

For many men, the ideal chest is lean, muscular, and chiseled. However, feminized features created by excess fat and tissue on the chest can still make men feel less confident. To help Long Beach patients restore their confidence, gynecomastia surgery is provided to remove excess breast tissue, skin, and fat from the chest. If needed, the nipples can also be resized and repositioned to a more normal state.

Your Consultation for Gynecomastia Surgery

During your gynecomastia surgery consultation in Long Beach, Dr. Waltzman will take detailed measurements and thoroughly analyze the elasticity of your tissues. He’ll take note of your aesthetic goals and collaborate with you on a treatment plan that will work with your unique body.

How Does Gynecomastia Surgery Work?

Your gynecomastia procedure will be performed in a Long Beach hospital under general anesthesia. Dr. Waltzman will perform a combination of liposuction and excision to sculpt the chest. If the condition had created extra fatty tissue, then Dr. Waltzman would only perform liposuction. But, if there’s dense glandular tissue in the breasts, then Dr. Waltzman will recommend excision as well.

In general, excess male breast tissue is caused by weight gain, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions and medications. It’s not caused entirely by fat; for some men, this happens independently of their weight. In that case, the enlargement is due to an excess of fibrous breast tissue—a symptom usually caused by hormonal changes or a medical condition.

Your gynecomastia surgery will result in some scarring on the chest, but they’ll be well hidden around the areola. If you do indeed undergo liposuction, this will result in a few small scars, but by the time they heal, they’ll only resemble a line about the length of a pencil eraser.

In addition to strategically placing each incision, Dr. Waltzman will also reduce tension on the incisions—a sure way to help the scars heal in the best possible manner.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Patients should be in relatively good health with no major conditions that can interfere with the surgery. Before you move on to your surgery, Dr. Waltzman will make sure that you’re not suffering from any condition that could create complications after the surgery. That’s why patients should also be willing to quit smoking at least 4-6 weeks before and after their procedure – nicotine can compromise the skin’s ability to heal after surgery.

What Results Can I Expect from Gynecomastia Surgery?

While you will see results immediately after your procedure, you can expect to have some swelling that will affect the area for several weeks. As this swelling resolves, you will see your flatter, more masculine chest and enjoy the confidence that accompanies it. Gynecomastia surgery results typically last a lifetime, although leading a healthy lifestyle is important to avoid fat accumulation in the area.

What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Dr. Waltzman will give patients a personalized post-surgery guide and require them to follow a schedule of in-office visits.

Most patients take around two weeks off from work to recover from gynecomastia surgery in Long Beach. If you have a more physical job, Dr. Waltzman recommends even longer. You’ll have to wear a compression garment for a few weeks to help shape the chest and decrease the amount of swelling.

You’ll experience some level of swelling, bruising, and soreness, but many patients report that they feel better than expected after surgery. Still, it’s important to allow your body to heal and to follow Dr. Waltzman’s instructions.
