How to Keep a Slim Body Before the Holidays

In theory, staying slim is a simple equation of burning more calories than you consume. If you eat more than your body needs, you put on weight. If you eat less, you lose weight.

If you eat exactly as many calories as you burn, you will maintain your current body weight.

In practice, though, it’s not this straightforward – particularly around the holiday season, where food, drinks, and merriment are in abundance. Getting and staying slim takes motivation, determination, knowledge, and persistence.

Here, Dr. Waltzman reviews the easiest ways you can stay as slender as possible leading into the holiday season.

Learn to Count Calories

Knowing how many calories are in the foods we consume is possibly the most critical step in a weight-loss or weight-maintenance journey.

Merely being aware of what we consume lets us know when we’ve overeaten or undereaten, and goes a long way to maintain a trim figure in the presence of delicious foods.

Make a Pact With Yourself

Many of us gain a few pounds over the holiday season, and that’s OK.

Agree with yourself on how much weight you’re willing to tolerate putting on – for example, five extra pounds. By mentally preparing to gain a bit of weight over the holidays, you will have the motivation to hit the new year running (pun intended), and shed the extra weight gained within the first few months of 2021.

Keep up the Exercise

While nobody wants to deny themselves their favorite foods during the holidays, you can keep weight gain to a minimum by staying active.

Doing 20 minutes per day of high-intensity interval training will burn extra calories and keep your weight gain to a minimum.
