Round VS. Teardrop/Anatomical Form Stable Implants

Round

Round implants are the most popular implants in the US at this time because patients feel that they move and feel more like a real breast. Since the implant is round, there is no texture required on the outer shell enabling the implant to move in the breast pocket freely. Textured round implants are also available and chosen by some patients that would like to keep their implants in one place in the breast pocket. It has also been reported that texturing on the outer shell of implants can reduce the chance of capsular contracture (scar tissue in the breast pocket).

Teardrop (Anatomical/Gummy Bear/Form Stable)

Teardrop implants are designed to mimic the contours and fullness of a mature breast, and gently slope to a projection point in the lower part of the breast. Although this look is quite natural, there is a substantially augmented result. Patients that opt for a teardrop shaped implant are usually looking to restore volume lost due to breastfeeding and/or weight loss. Teardrop implants require a textured coating to ensure that the implant does not move or slip out of place. Studies have also shown that textured implants have a lower capsular contracture (scar tissue in the breast pocket) rate than smooth implants. Since the gel in a teardrop implant is cohesive, there is also a very low chance of visible rippling.
